Young Harrow Foundation (YHF) Trustee Role
Young Harrow Foundation are seeking an enthusiastic, committed person to join our growing Trustee Board with a background and knowledge of Grant Giving in the charitable sector.
This is a great volunteering opportunity for an individual committed to supporting local charities and being instrumental in bringing about positive and long-lasting change to the lives of children and young people in Harrow. You don’t need to have been a charity Trustee before, although experience is always welcome, but you will be required to evidence you have the skills and expertise required.
Background
YHF is a membership centric charity established in 2015. Harrow was one of the first three pilots started in outer London boroughs to see the set-up of a Young People’s Foundation. The YPF initiative was introduced and supported by John Lyon’s Charity and developed in response to the ongoing challenges facing the Children and Young People’s sector, Young People’s Foundations bring together the public, private and voluntary sectors to effect positive change for children and young people.
We have been set up to work with inspirational organisations (our members) a diverse range of not-for-profit organisations, providing services focused on children and young people in the London Borough of Harrow.
We seek to develop strong relationships with our members, to bring a range of diverse groups together to develop partnership projects and consortium models, to identify and raise funds from a range of sources and to support and develop a range of responsive services for all children and young people in Harrow.
Skills Gap
We are seeking to fill a skills gap, having had two Trustees from two major Grant giving bodies, step down after doing there 4 years agreed commitment. We would particularly welcome applicants with Grant Giving experience within the charitable sector. YHF started by giving out grants of around £30,000 in our first year to now distributing just short of £1 million in this financial year.
Personal skills Required
- Understanding and knowledge of the charity sector.
- Strong commitment to improving the lives of children and young people in Harrow.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a diverse team.
- Personal integrity, independence of mind and willingness to challenge and question.
- Commitment and capacity to attend Board and trustee working group meetings as required and to engage actively in between Board meetings.
- An active commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Experience:
- Must have first -hand experience of being a grant giver through an open application processes.
Time Commitment
The Board meet approximately 4 times per year and have moved to ‘hybrid’ meetings with the option of face-to-face or virtual. YHF has a yearly AGM which tends to be early evening and a full days Team and Trustee Planning session. You may be required to attend Grant Panels where an outside funder is unable to, as set out in our Grant Making Policy (this will be made available to those we interview).
Training and expenses
Training will also be available as required by the successful candidate. The role is voluntary and non-remunerated. We will reimburse reasonable travel and similar direct expenses incurred to attend meetings as well as considering unavoidable and allowable childcare costs.
YHF Governance
YHF is managed overall by a Board of seven trustees from diverse backgrounds and day to day by the CEO and his team.
Location
YHF office at Harrow on the Hill or where more space is required, at Harrow School (offering hybrid meetings as appropriate). The nearest station is Harrow on the Hill, which is approximately 15 minutes’ walk or a short bus ride, car parking can be arranged.
