What
Too many children carry the weight of domestic abuse in silence. Building Bridges is our award-winning therapeutic programme that uses the power of creative arts to help young people aged 4 to 18 find their voice, feel safe, and begin to heal from the trauma they have witnessed or experienced at home.
When children experience or witness abuse within the home, the effects can be strong and long-lasting. Many carry feelings of fear, confusion, isolation, or responsibility for things that were never theirs to carry. At Building Bridges, we create safe and welcoming spaces where children can begin to make sense of their experiences, rebuild confidence, and feel understood. Our sessions combine creative and relationship-based activities such as art, sport, mindfulness, and group work. These activities help reduce stigma and isolation while allowing children to express themselves in ways that feel natural and safe. As a result, young people develop improved self-esteem, stronger communication skills, and increased emotional resilience. Through shared experiences, laughter, and supportive relationships, they begin to rediscover joy, connection, and a sense of belonging. We also work closely with the non-abusive parent, recognising that children heal best when the family around them is supported. Our approach helps children recover by strengthening family relationships and helping parents rebuild confidence and stability, thereby increasing resilience and overall family well-being. Our team brings professional expertise and lived experience to build authentic, trusting relationships while supporting complex needs. Reflecting diverse communities, we include men and women as positive, restorative role models for young people. While the experiences many children bring to the programme are serious, the service itself is designed to be positive, engaging, and fun. We aim to replace some of the difficult experiences children may have had with new memories of safety, celebration, and achievement, helping them reclaim the childhood moments that trauma can sometimes take away. By strengthening identity, resilience, and belonging, Building Bridges helps prevent the long-term impact of trauma, such as emotional difficulties or relationship challenges. We support children and families to move forward with greater hope, stability, academic engagement, and social connectedness.
